“Well of course the routes and times of armoured carriage transfers aren’t public knowledge!” The manager of the bank was a short, thin man with a gaunt face and thinning hair.
“We just have a few questions, sir. About the protocol and the cargo list?”
He sighed. “Our branch on Duran is closing and all assets are being transferred to the Spadina branch. The content of the cargo, time of the shipment, and routes are set the day before.”
“And who sets them?” Murdoch asked.
“I do.”
“And who else is privy to that information?”
“No one,” he answered, resigned.
Murdoch furrowed his brow. “Then how did the thieves know the carriage route?”
“I don’t know. Look, I’m not sure how else I can help you. Almost all the money was left in the getaway carriage so we thankfully only lost a few safety deposit bank boxes. If you need anything else, talk to my secretary, Georgina.”

A modern typewriter took pride of place on Georgina’s desk, next to a photo of herself and a young man you recognize as Bryson. “I type up all of the manager’s instructions and notes,” she explained, gesturing to a memo spike already half-deep in handwritten memos and an inbox tray full of more to be transcribed. “It’s not bad work. The hours are good and I get a full half hour for lunch. If there’s something specific you need help with, just let me know. I have access to all of the files.”
We asked to see the records on the bank boxes from the transfer, which Georgina pulled for us from a wall of filing cabinets.
“One box belonged to Mr. Joshua Grady, another to Edward Hopkins, and the third to Lochlan Markle.” She handed us a neatly typed sheet.

“When we heard the branch was closing, we sent letters to everyone who had a safety deposit bank box with us, informing them that they would be transferred to the Spadina branch. It didn’t include any of the details of the transfer, of course,” she hurried to explain.

When we returned to the branch, Georgina pulled Edward Hopkins’ file for us. “Oh, that’s strange. The last time he accessed his box or his savings account was the same day he opened them, over ten years ago – 7 July 1890.”
